One Chance in Life. Get it Right.

This week I have spent more time listening than writing. People around me are struggling. Difficult ex-spouses, ailing parents, children struggling with school routines, parents struggling with school routines, separated couples at war, job stress, financial worries, life changes, relationship obstacles, relationship disappointments, and entering puberty have all been discussions I have had this week.

I have also been listening to my inner voice. I have been contemplating how to get this thing called life right. Am I walking down the right path? I am making decisions, but how will these decisions affect me and others a few years from now? If I made big mistakes in the past, can I really trust myself to make good decisions now?

What I know is that all of us have just one chance in life (unless you believe in reincarnation). I also believe we can’t control our future, how others behave, or make perfect decisions.

So what are we to do?

I am finding comfort in these few thoughts:

  • Making a decision and moving forward is better than living with indecision.
  • Prepare for curves in the road and treacherous terrain on my journey.
  • Don’t allow the behavior of others determine my own behavior.
  • Pick my battles.
  • Seek happiness.
  • Forgive myself and others.
  • Recognize I will make mistakes.
  • Embrace change.
  • Learn from my mistakes.

I just have one life to live. For me, at 40-something, I am paying close attention to the choices I make.

What about you? What are you doing in your life?

Here’s the Song of the Week.

  3. Clyde:

    Maybe you are more than you think that you are …. and your soul has already got it right …..

  4. Naked Girl in a Dress:

    That would be wonderful Clyde! I am just not sure, yet I have to make decisions and trust I am doing the right thing.

    What a great song. And a great list.

    I agree to pick your battles.
    Support people wherever they are on their journey.
    Always assume the best of people.
    When my heart says it’s safe, be completely open with others.
    Be true to myself; trust my heart.
    Let other people be in charge of their own lives.
    Fight for everyone’s right to be stupid, so that I can when it’s my turn.

    I love this post and your list. As I am also a 40-something standing at the crossroads of life, I can really relate! My personal list?

    Live your truth;
    You don’t have to apologize for being who you are;
    You are the sum of your choices — good and bad;
    Live a life of gratitude — it’s the right attitude;
    You make the choice. Every day.

    Again, great post!

    Great advice Cara!

  14. Karen Peterson:

    I have really been struggling with indecision lately. Trying to figure out exactly what I want to do with myself. It’s hard, but you’re right. Making a decision and going forward is better than wasting time thinking about it.

  15. Naked Girl in a Dress:

    That is a struggle I have had too–trying to figure out what I want to do with myself. I made some decisions, but then was worried about actually following through. One of my struggles was whether to attend photography school or not. I start Monday and I am very excited I finally made the decision.

    Whatever you are struggling with, make the decision and do it.

    Best of luck!

    Great list! (Stopping by from the Red Dress Club)

    I am trying to:
    live in the moment
    be an example to my kids through my actions, not just my words
    embrace the positive
    accept that there are things I cannot control
