You Had Me at Abnormal

in Relationships, Song of the Week

I experienced a you-had-me-at-hello moment with my boyfriend recently. The words uttered by my boyfriend would not be taken by many as romantic and loving; some could consider it as an insult.

Here’s what he said:

“I don’t want a normal woman. I want you.”

For me, it couldn’t get any better than that. In one simple statement he was able to express that his feelings for me are unconditional. He has had enough experiences with me to know I have quirks that some see as maddening, but he thinks are endearing; these things simply make him smile.

He gets me, with my long list of idiosyncrasies, and embraces everything that makes me who I am. It’s such a great feeling to experience and something I have continued to maintain is essential for me to even be in a relationship with a man.

“The beginning of love is to let those we love be perfectly themselves, and not to twist them to fit our own image. Otherwise we love only the reflection of ourselves we find in them.” ~Thomas Merton

Accepting me for who I am, completely and unconditionally, is a wonderful gift and a great start to what is turning into an extraordinary relationship.

Enjoy “Secret Garden” by Bruce Springsteen for Song of the Week. It is one of the songs on the Jerry Maguire soundtrack.

Happy Friday!

Men like that are hard to find – but so are women like you! :)

Normal = boring. It’s the quirks that make the person/relationship interesting… unless those quirks involve pain fetishes while Bieber music plays in the background. Then it’s best to just move on.

Anyhoo looks like you found yourself a keeper.

You are funny Vinny. I think the quirkiness is what we all have in common writing at Sprocket Ink. I am convinced there isn’t a normal one in the bunch! It gives us that special creativity needed to write like we do. Bieber/pain fetish thing–totally agree! LOL.

Isn’t it grand when some embraces all your quirks.

It feels wonderful and was worth the wait.

I said the same thing to my wife once. Spent the next two hours frantically explaining it so I wouldn’t have to sleep on the couch. Sometimes being a “nice guy” doesn’t pay.

Yes, this is a comment that could be taken as an insult. I embrace my quirkiness and know it exists so I appreciated what he said. Glad you didn’t have to sleep on the sofa!
