My 3 Words for 2012

After posting on Monday the idea of creating a New Year’s Resolutions list that is filled with things you are actually excited to do, I came across this image posted on Google +. The list is either sad or funny, depending upon your perspective. Whatever your thoughts, this is an example of what NOT to do in the coming year.

While I shared my New Year’s Resolutions list and wrote about how excited I am to start, I am doing one more thing as we ease into 2012. I am going to be ever-mindful of three words in 2012. This idea comes from Chris Brogan, who has been doing this exercise since 2006.

My immediate reaction was to have my three words be Free, Happy, and Uninhibited since those three words define the life I am choosing to lead and is also the basis for this blog. But these three words have been my mantra since my 2008 separation and I am already mindful of them each day. These three words are always with me so I want three more for 2012.

 My 3 Words for 2012

Focus– I will focus on my relationships, myself, and my business. Having a focus will help me to improve what needs repair, but also take things already good to another level.

Achieve– Since 2008 my life has been about transitions and new beginnings as I forged out as a single mom, negotiated my divorce, redefined what I wanted in life, entered the dating scene, went to photography school, and started this blog. I entered 2012 no longer in transition, but standing on the edge, ready for great things; 2012 is my year to achieve and with the hard work I have done in all aspects of my life these last three years, I am poised to do it.

Patience– I have a tendency to be impatient, especially with myself. Patience is one of my three words to remind me to be kind, gentle, and understanding with myself and about circumstances in the next 12 months.

What will your three words be this year?

  1. Well done. To be so mindful of where you are as a person and in your life is quite inspiring.

I wish you all you want in the coming year.

I truly believe you are on the edge of greatness too Eric. You have identified your passion, what you want, and you have made the decision to achieve it in 2012.

It will be a better year for you; I just know it.

I love this idea – three words for my new year?

Kindness – for myself and others [eh, maybe just for me]

Determination – the knowledge that I can do what I want because I have the strength in me already

Appreciation – I have to remind myself that this does not mean complacency.

    LOVE THIS!

These are great words. Very inspiring.

      Thanks for sharing!

    All great words. :)
I trust that you had a good Festive season. Happy new year. All the best for 2012.
My 3 words will definitely be:
    positive
    positive
    positive

Last year I had issues with staying positive in rough times, and also having immediate negative thoughts about ideas/plans i came up with, so I just let them slip away. Will NOT happen this year.

    Thanks for posting this.
    Will be back soon.
    Rochelle.

I am glad you enjoyed this post. There is nothing wrong with only focusing on being positive; good things will come of it. Good luck!

  4. I got myself in “trouble’ with my three words.

I am a big fan of focus and patience. Those two items are critical for success. Focus helps pay attention to what is important and patience reminds us that it is ok to work for something.

I am going to hunt down your three words on the internet Jack! You didn’t share them here. I am guessing you shared on Google+, your site, or Brogan’s site. You have piqued my curiosity.

I am struggling with Patience this first week of 2012. I think this will be the most difficult word for me in the New Year.

  5. I am beginning to think that my mind would work better with words than with resolutions:

    I say “kindness,patience, and kindness.”

Kindness needs to be stated twice.

    Happy New Year, beautiful woman!

I think it is a great idea to resolve to keep three words in mind in the New Year. It seems manageable, but I must say Patience has been a struggle this first week. I hope you have an easier time with that word.

Happy New Year to you as well Alexandra!

  6. Those are fabulous words – I love the idea of using three words to guide your year, if I was less lazy I would definitely join in!

  7. I love your words! I need to think of some of my own!

  8. I absolutely loved reading this post!

This was my first year coming up with a word goal, and I started with one word- release. I may love the idea of three words even more!

It took me several days to choose release as my word and it may take a few more to settle on two more words for this year. Off the top of my head I’d say….

    Intentional
    Love
    Release

Love may not be the best word for my meaning, which is truly to be more mindful about sharing love with the important people in my life, like my husband, my furkids, and my friends.

One of my dogs is terminally ill and I am going to spend as much quality time with him as I can. And on that note, I want to spend more quality time with my husband, too.

Thanks for sharing this awesome idea!

I love your three words! It is very helpful to have words to be mindful of during the year. Yesterday I was very frustrated with my lack of progress and how the day just got away from me. I re-read this post this morning and made note that ‘Achieve’ does not say I will accomplish my goals in the first four weeks of the New Year. ‘Patience’ also reminded me that I am really hard on myself and that I need to allow myself to have days that will be less productive and be okay with it.

I hope the three words helps you this year. So far it has been good for me.
