Semi-Unplugged Sundays

Relax live life fully

I work daily. Yes, seven days a week. Before you start to feel sorry for me, let me stop you. I am not opening up today’s post looking for sympathy or trying to gain a martyr-like status.

I love what I do.

My work time is as enjoyable as my play time.

I do have a life and I don’t work seven days a week, 8-10 hour days. I enjoy exercising, cooking, time with my kids, date nights and weekends with the boyfriend, reading, socializing, and more. What I mean about working seven days is that in some way I touch various work projects daily; I am never completely unplugged for 24 hours. It is the nature of the beast with social media marketing, consulting, running a social media site, and a having an editorial calendar to follow.

The best thing about my professional life is that while I have to meet deadlines, I do have complete freedom with my schedule. This meant, for example, taking Tuesday evening with The Boyfriend and spending Wednesday morning on a long run around the National Mall and Tidal Basin (with cherry blossoms in full bloom) with him.

I also work from home and enjoy the zero commute time. If I am feeling a little “squirrely ” after too many hours in front of the computer, I can step straight from my office to my yard to work on the garden or put on running shoes and go for a run for a while. Some might need the interactions in an office environment, but I thrive on the solitude.

As an early riser, the Sundays the kids are with me I was able to work for three hours in the morning before they woke up and several hours after they were in bed. It occurred to me it was getting to be as long of a work day as during the week. After this realization, I started getting as close to unplugged as possible for me.

If I post on Sunday, it is scheduled to be released before Sunday arrives so no work is required from me that day. With my new Sunday routine, those hours the kids are sleeping are for reading or gardening. For me, stretching out lazily on the sofa with a good book on a Sunday is the best way to start a relaxing day.

I have only been doing this for a few weeks.  One week the kids were with me and the other was a day with The Boyfriend. This Sunday, however, I am all alone. And I can’t wait. Instead of a lazy early morning routine followed by another reading session until I fall asleep, I have an entire day. There will be running, reading, and gardening. I discovered a great new recipe to make for dinner that evening as well.

Semi-Unplugged Sundays are becoming the best days.

And you know what?

I am more productive leading up to Sunday and early the next week as well. I am finding by unplugging on Sunday, I am actually accomplishing more each week.

On the seventh day He rested.

Maybe it’s a good idea for a hard-working, single mom too.

For Song of the Week here’s Foo Fighters “These Days.” It seems like the perfect song, reminding us to live fully, love, and enjoy each moment because at some point “our heart will stop and play it’s final beat.”

I plan to enjoy each beat I have remaining~whether it is work, love, or play.

How about you?

  1. I work seven days a week, same as you… maybe I should take a day to be semi unplugged as well?

If you do, please let me know how it goes for you.

  2. David

How lovely. That reminded me of a book I read a few years ago titled, “In Praise of Slowness” by a French writer whose name I forget. Anyway, I’m pleased for you that you can just soak in the joy of life on that day and re-charge for the busy week ahead. Enjoy!

Thanks David! I am enjoying this new routine.

  3. I think everyone needs time to recharge their batteries, whether that means being unplugged, unavailable, or just plain unsociable.

I love that: “unplugged, unavailable, or just plain unsociable.”

      Thanks for the visit.

  4. Let’s see… I’ve worked 2 years without a single day off. I too love what I’m doing, though I’m unglugging sure sounds good. Enjoyed your post.

Thank you Kay. I am glad to find more people who work daily, but love their work. Once you follow your passion, it really does not feel like work, does it?

I am really glad we connected on Facebook.

  5. Yep. I’ve been doing 7 days too. That’s why today I unplugged for a part of the day.

Emails are rolling in and a few needed immediate attention.

Seems I can’t take an entire day.

I was so happy to hear of your semi-unplugged Friday! I hope it was a great ride and relaxing day, even with emails to check and an overly-excited text from me. :)

  6. Work is easy when you love what you do. I too work some everyday and wouldn’t change it for anything.
