The Definition of Tenacious

challenge accepted

Tenacious.

That’s one adjective a man used to describe himself to me on a first date a month ago. I thought I understood the definition of tenacious before I started dating him, but he has shown me I really didn’t understand the meaning.

Tenacious is when a man is interested in a woman, but is unflappable when she states she is a serial dater with no interest in a serious relationship with him. He responds by telling her it is best she take her time and date as many men as she needs because when they are in a serious relationship, he wants her to be through that phase and solidly committed.

Tenacious is when a man is not able to be persuaded to date other women even when the woman he is casually seeing offers to email him good prospects from online dating sites. Instead he tells her he is only interested in her, but thanks her for offering to help.

Tenacious is when he doesn’t shift in his desire to pursue her even though she tells him every bad decision she has made dating in the last four years and sends him less-than-flattering blog posts about her love life as further proof to dissuade him. Instead of shaking his resolve, it leads to him telling her she can spend her energy trying to convince him to back down or enjoy each moment they have together, but that there is nothing she can say to change his mind.

Tenacious is a dialog that looks like this:

Me: “I can guarantee I will almost definitely be ready to possibly be someone’s girlfriend by Thanksgiving.”

Guy: “Is Thanksgiving the second weekend in September this year?”

Yes, I did learn the true meaning of tenacious in the last month. I also discovered I have no superpowers to protect myself from an intelligent, handsome, funny, interesting, loving, tenacious man.

It’s best to concede to his persuasive ways.

Which I did.

And I am happy.

  1. that’s a word i used to describe my wife after i met her

Not saying you’re getting married again to this dude or anyone else, but tenaciousness is one hell of a quality.

    congratulations

Let’s not start on the M-word, Lance!

Yes, I agree about having a tenacious quality. He has such confidence in us and a strong resolve in dealing with all that comes his way in dating me. I find it to be a very attractive quality.

It’s really nice of you to visit at this difficult time in our relationship….you know, the whole Braves/Nats thing. It’s big of you.

      Go Nats!

  2. HAHAHAHA! I like him already! Congrats! xoxo

      Thanks, Nicole!

  3. Gotta “love” a man who knows what he wants and how to get it!

  4. Awesome. TOTALLY awesome. :-)

  5. His Friend

This makes me happy. Enjoy EVERY second!! “The guy” is worth it!!!

Thanks for visiting and reading what I wrote about “the guy.” He makes me very happy, and I enjoy having him in my life.

  6. dude sounds like a keeper- this post reminds me a lot of how things went for my boyfriend and I when we first met… he would NOT give up on getting me, no matter how much I pushed and shoved him away…. and these days? I’m SO happy he was so tenacious. :)

I was skittish and unsure about the idea of being in a committed relationship again so this was a battle. He saw something in me and us that was worth waiting for. He’s still dealing with my worries, but he always handles it beautifully.

  7. Hahaha, wow, persistent guy!

Serial or casual dating can be a great learning experience, but I agree here – if you find someone too wonderful to postpone stepping into a proper relationship… why draw it out? :) Happy for you!

    1. Naked Girl in a Dress

I believe he is so persistent because he sees something in us and knows he has to wait out my craziness. Patience is working in his favor.

  8. For a minute, I was afraid he was going to turn into a stalker :)

So glad it went the other way! Delighted for you!

    1. Naked Girl in a Dress

He is definitely not a stalker! He is totally confident we have something worth being patient for, and has given me the space to find my way.

  9. Me! Me! I’m tenacious. I didn’t realize it until I read this but that totally describes me when I was dating Mrs C. No matter how hard she tried she just couldn’t shake me. And believe me she tried. In the end I wore her down though.

    1. Naked Girl in a Dress

From all that you have written about you and Mrs. C, I do know you are tenacious! It’s great you never gave up because it sounds like you all have something really special now. I am happy for you, Vinny.

  10. This post makes me nervous. I have a tenacious one on my hands right now and just realized that is has been over a year now that he has put up with and deflected all of my excuses, my extra-curricular dating activities, and all of my bs. I keep thinking eventually he will go away and yet…he is tenacious. Crap!

    1. Naked Girl in a Dress

I think for me, and definitely you, we need tenacious, strong, confident men to hold and keep our attention (and put up with us). You, like me, might be in trouble. He sees you are worth it and is going to wait for you to do what you need to, fully expecting you to commit at some point. That’s my guess.

    2. Again I say “Crap!”
But perhaps it’s a good thing, for you and for me. We’ll see!
