What Would You Do with an Extra Hour in Your Day?

red clockFall back.

Two of the best words this time of year. I become gleeful over the idea of having an extra hour.  I would prefer sixty minutes each day though. It seems one thing holding me back from accomplishing more is time; I lack enough of it.

If I could add one hour a day to my life, here are some things I would do:

  • Expand my training schedule.
  • Increase my writing frequency.
  • Clean my house thoroughly, and keep it that way.
  • Read more books, and catch up on the pile of unread magazines.
  • Spend more time behind the lens of my camera.
  • Complete a couple of website projects on my business to do list.

There’s more, but these are the items I think about daily. As I look at the list, it makes me happy to realize there are areas of my life I feel good about–they don’t belong on the list. Quality time with my kids is one example.

I know gaining an hour a day isn’t going to happen, but that doesn’t mean I can’t find the time on my own. Within the 24 hours I have each day, there is time that could be used more productively. Being more efficient when working is one example. Setting my alarm an hour earlier is another great way to accomplish more in a day.

What would you do with an extra 365 hours?

Can you find an extra time in your day to achieve your goals?

  1. I woke up Sunday morning and would’ve been an hour ahead all day if not for my iPhone and its auto-updated clock. I totally forgot about the change.

I’d probably waste that extra hour every day deciding which of the 7429 things on my list to do with it. >.<

I completely understand, Sean! If I don’t have a list of what I want to accomplish in the day, I too find time is spent deciding. I hope you enjoyed Sunday.

  2. What I would actually do is probably play excessive online Scrabble or something. *ashamed*

Don’t be ashamed. I am trying to kick a Plants vs. Zombies habit right now.

  3. Selfishly I’d want to spend that 1 hour relaxing with my two MB’s at home. Sounds delightful to me.

      That sounds wonderful!

  4. That’s really tricky. I’d like to believe that I’d spend the time writing since I frequently complain that I don’t have enough time to finish the script, pitch the script, write the blog, etc. I’d like to say that I’d also catch up on errands, cleaning, getting my eyebrows waxed… hell, I’d like to just go down to the beach one of these days since it’s all of a 10 minute drive, including parking. In reality, I’m afraid I might just waste the time. I’m shockingly more productive when I have no other choice. Then again, it might be nice to just have the time to waste. :)

I am also incredibly productive when faced with deadlines. I need to bottle that energy and drive for daily use.

  5. I’d love a blissful hour of a good book, cup of herbal tea, and my dog at my feet. Heavenly!

Maybe I can carve it out of Tuesday?

That sounds like a great use of an hour! You are off today so I think you should find that hour for yourself, Kimberly.

  6. Write more. Because sleeping more would be out of the question with two kids.

Two kids do get in the way of more sleep. Writing is a great choice.

  7. Oh how I would love an extra hour in each day…while I would like to think that I would use it to clean my house, I would probably be totally selfish and use it to catch up on all of the books that I have wanted to read!

I think it’s totally acceptable to be selfish with that extra hour. Reading would be a great way to use the bonus time.

  8. There are so many things I would do if I just had that extra hour. Meditate, yoga, read, write… But then I think… I’m just making excuses. I just need 10 minutes to meditate, 20 minutes and I’ll have a great yoga session… reading/writing? I can easily devote an hour to both of those activities. It really does come down to time management.

Glad that QT with your kids is a high priority for you, momma :) I honestly don’t know how you balance it all, but you do an amazing job. XOXO

It is about time management, isn’t it? We can all find an extra hour in our day. Maybe not every day, but most days. My time management feels more like rotating my effort in putting out fires. I get into a regular writing routine, and the house becomes messier. I take a few days off from writing to catch up on the cleaning. That’s what it typically looks like for me.

Between work, homeschooling and kids’ activities we have little time to do stuff as a family! I would love to be able to share more of these things with my husband, so he could participate more in our kids’ lives!

That sounds like a great plan, Sabrina!

  10. That’s an amazing idea. I’d probably spend my hour sleeping. Which is lame. But then I’d be happier in all my other hours!

Sleep is a great idea, Megan! Thanks for visiting.

  11. When I know I have more work ahead I wake up hour earlier, but along the day waking up at 4 or 5 shows itself. Sleepiness many times makes you procrastinate with other things tho. Have to find a fix with that!
But if I had that one extra hour added to 24h I would most definitely stay longer at Shelter or using to raise extra awareness about dogs!

That’s a great use of time: to help animals!

I love spending time in Thai massage and aromatherapy….

  13. I would love to spend more time meditating!
