This week I have spent more time listening than writing. People around me are struggling. Difficult ex-spouses, ailing parents, children struggling with school routines, parents struggling with school routines, separated couples at war, job stress, financial worries, life changes, relationship obstacles, relationship disappointments, and entering puberty have all been discussions I have had this week.

I have also been listening to my inner voice. I have been contemplating how to get this thing called life right. Am I walking down the right path? I am making decisions, but how will these decisions affect me and others a few years from now? If I made big mistakes in the past, can I really trust myself to make good decisions now?

What I know is that all of us have just one chance in life (unless you believe in reincarnation). I also believe we can’t control our future, how others behave, or make perfect decisions.

So what are we to do?

I am finding comfort in these few thoughts:

  • Making a decision and moving forward is better than living with indecision.
  • Prepare for curves in the road and treacherous terrain on my journey.
  • Don’t allow the behavior of others determine my own behavior.
  • Pick my battles.
  • Seek happiness.
  • Forgive myself and others.
  • Recognize I will make mistakes.
  • Embrace change.
  • Learn from my mistakes.

I just have one life to live. For me, at 40-something, I am paying close attention to the choices I make.

What about you? What are you doing in your life?

Here’s the Song of the Week.
