Vinny C: Why He Blogs (and Draws Cool Stick Figures)

Today’s guest writer is Vinny C. He is a fun co-worker at Sprocket Ink. We hit it off with a few funny exchanges when the staff was introduced to each other and I have been enjoying his sense of humor ever since.

He’s a cool guy with not just writing as a talent, but also stick figure drawing; he illustrates all of his posts and many at Sprocket Ink too. I was excited to see he made a picture for this guest post as well.

Enjoy Vinny’s warped funny sense of humor…

For us bloggers, blogging existentialism is something we all face at least once. In my case, the first time I really had to deal with the question of why I blog came not from within, but from an external source.

It was just before being terminated from my job at Soul Suck Int’l – A division of the Ninth Circle. A new girl in sales, bored with the mind-numbing hours of training videos, decided to get to know the rest of staff a little better. Unfortunately, her desk was right next to mine so I was her first target.

New Girl: So, Vinny, what do you do for fun? Do you go to any clubs?
Me: Nope. I’m just a boring gamer geek.
New Girl: Really? You don’t “lime” (local word for, hang out) or anything?
Me: Nope, nothing.
New Girl: Well you have to have some kind of hobby besides gaming.
Me: Well… I blog…
New Girl: OH NO!!! A blogger!?! That’s the worst kind of geek!

Her outburst caught me off guard at first, but I think handled it well…

Kidding! She’s still alive (Unless the job has killed her by now). In truth, I just ignored her remark.

Anyway, after that day she was soon out doing her sales thing and I hardly ever saw her. We did run into each other in the office kitchen from time to time, though, and she would always make a point of asking how my blogging was going. If you pretended, you could barely detect the hint of condescension in her voice too. I, in turn, would just shrug and make a point of ignoring her while not scarring her with scalding hot coffee.

Good times…

One day, though, I guess she had some more time on her hands than usual because she actually came out and asked me.

“Why do you blog?”

I thought about telling her exactly why I did blog. I could have told her about how blogging helps me clear my thoughts and face issues I was dealing with inside. She’d learn that, through blogging, I was able to have a voice and I could say exactly what I was thinking or feeling without being interrupted by someone who thought they could pick my point apart at my every pause. She’d know about the great people I met and how we shared so much of our lives with each other. That’s what I thought about telling her. “Blogging,” I would have told her, “was how I processed things.”

Instead, my answer was short and simple. “It’s just what I do,” was all I said.

While my answer could have been more detailed, the truth is I didn’t think she was the type to really appreciate a more in-depth answer than that. Maybe I was being judgmental but I didn’t think she’d understand my reasons. How could she? By then, I knew her well enough to know that her preferred method for processing all of life’s hardships was with weekend clubbing, smoking, drinking binges and sex.

As if those would ever work, right?

  4. THIS this is def up there on my list of why i blog: “I could say exactly what I was thinking or feeling without being interrupted by someone who thought they could pick my point apart at my every pause.” i love anonymity. and the community. it’s so supportive and kind (for the most part) when i’m speaking my mind. such a shocker to experience.

  5. nice work, vinny! that nosey ho didn’t deserve any further explanation. but you could have messed with her a little and told her that it’s where you like to showcase your fetishes through photos and video. bet that would have peaked her curiosity.
