I experienced a you-had-me-at-hello moment with my boyfriend recently. The words uttered by my boyfriend would not be taken by many as romantic and loving; some could consider it as an insult.

Here’s what he said:

“I don’t want a normal woman. I want you.”

For me, it couldn’t get any better than that. In one simple statement he was able to express that his feelings for me are unconditional. He has had enough experiences with me to know I have quirks that some see as maddening, but he thinks are endearing; these things simply make him smile.

He gets me, with my long list of idiosyncrasies, and embraces everything that makes me who I am. It’s such a great feeling to experience and something I have continued to maintain is essential for me to even be in a relationship with a man.

“The beginning of love is to let those we love be perfectly themselves, and not to twist them to fit our own image. Otherwise we love only the reflection of ourselves we find in them.” ~Thomas Merton

Accepting me for who I am, completely and unconditionally, is a wonderful gift and a great start to what is turning into an extraordinary relationship.

Enjoy “Secret Garden” by Bruce Springsteen for Song of the Week. It is one of the songs on the Jerry Maguire soundtrack.
