I consider myself a fun mom. I am the first to wear my pj’s inside out to encourage snow (what, you haven’t heard about this trick?) the next day and one of the few moms who squeals when school is canceled. I enjoy a wide range of activities with the kids: playing games, baking, sledding, movie nights, building Legos and more. I thrive on the chaos of having my kids and another five from the neighborhood tearing through my house, doing messy projects, and building forts with sofa pillows.
I also take my responsibility as a mom, in helping my children grow to be moral, responsible citizens, seriously as well. There are consequences for bad behavior and there is an overall expectation to be accountable. There is a nice balance between expectations for proper behavior and having fun.
This preamble is not meant to sway you, hoping you will vote for me for a Mommy of the Year award. No, instead, this is to hopefully refrain you from calling Child Protective Services with what I am about to share.
But first, let me set the scene.
The kids have been home from school with a GI bug all week. There has been diarrhea and vomiting for days.
That’s not all.
Tuesday morning a construction project started on the house. Three guys and constant loud noises added to the fun.
Wait. It gets better.
Lucky the dog lost her mind because of the three guys and continuous noises. She barked constantly and dug at the hardwoods whenever she heard the noise, which was all day.
And I worked through all of this, having to schedule one business call for 8:30 last night, hoping the dog would be passed out from the exhaustion of digging and barking all day. Another two hour call with a different client was pushed to today, praying the dog will be calm enough for us to be on Skype for the meeting.
A conversation with Monkey yesterday just might make you reach for the phone to report me:
Monkey: “Mom, do you think I am going to be able to go to school tomorrow.”
Me: “Oh, you are going to school even if it means putting a diaper on you to get you through the day.”
Move over Joan Crawford.
There’s a new mommy in town.

With the kids and dog packing up after school for a weekend of “daddy time,” I am going to be relishing a weekend of mostly solitude. I have a few social engagements and a long run with a friend, but there will be large blocks of time when all I will hear is a Pandora station playing quietly in the background. My guess is Nora Jones will be playing this weekend. Here’s “Come Away with Me” for Song of the Week:

So in the past few weeks I have had the emmense pleasure of finding a plethora of mommy blogs from women who are obviosuly so much like me that it is scary, and it reinforces the thought in my head that I am not insane.
I have sent kids to school that were technically not in any condition to go to school, but I didn’t have time to stay home. So you are good to go.
Bad mommies unite!
Ha ha! With all that going on, if no-one is on fire at the end of the day, I’d call it a win :)
I am going with your opinion. So far no fires so all is good in our house.
Oh my! This post was a hoot! If it’s any consolation, I’ve had more Mommie Dearest moments as a mother than I want to admit. Luckily, my kids are both adults now and don’t seem to suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. hee hee! :)
Oh, I am so happy to know you had some Mommie Dearest moments too Bella! Wow, and your kids made it to adulthood. Maybe there is hope for mine.
I cannot imagine the torture of GI distress plus a neurotic dog plus a construction project. I’d have cracked way sooner than you did! Glad everyone’s feeling better now…and that you get a little bit of sanity time this weekend :)
Thanks Kimberly! It was a great weekend. I hope you had a wonderful weekend too.
“Wait it gets better…” HA! WHAT A LINE!
You sound like a pretty awesome parent to me, coming from Mr Expert with no kids who finds co-parenting two dogs a whole lot of responsibility…
Thanks! Parenting dogs can be just as frustrating and difficult. I know you are an awesome parent.
Sounds a lot like my life, which is crazy 24/7. Funny post, so glad I stumbled onto this blog!
I am so glad you found me too!
Hey NGID, I truly hope that you were able to get a little R&R this weekend. Sounds like you went through the ringer. All of mine had the GI bug last week too. One right after another – Mom and then each of the kids – like vomiting dominos. At least I dodged the bullet this time around. Can I tell you what fun Aspies are when they are sick? You know how most people just curl up and whimper when they’re sick? Aspies get crazy chatty – they have to tell you EVERYTHING they are going through in endless detail. Oh the shards of my sanity – where have they gone?
Oh, I am so sorry you had it in your home too! My kids bounced back and were in school Friday, but it hit over the weekend again when they were with their dad. They came home Sunday sick again and also missed school yesterday. This is an intense bug!
I hope your kids are better by now.
Wow, that is NOT a fun experience. I hope that the kids are feeling better and that you get some things accomplished!
They recovered and were in school Friday only to have a relapse over the weekend. Maybe by spring my kids will be well again.
